About the Assistant Election Commissioner (BS-17)

Role & Nature of the Position:

• Assistant Election Commissioner (AEC) is an officer rank job in the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
• It's a BPS-17 scale job — a mid-level gazetted officer job in the Pakistani civil service structure.
• AECs assist in planning, supervising, and conducting the election process in the constituencies or districts assigned to them.
• AECs ensure that elections are held justly, openly, and as per the law.
• They may be in charge of election personnel, coordinate voter rolls, conduct polling arrangement, and report on election problems.

Major Tasks:

• Conduct and monitor elections (general, by-elections, local government, or referendums).
• Coordinate with district administration, police, and other agencies for smooth polling arrangement.
• Monitor training and work of polling officials and election clerks.
• Deal with public grievances regarding the electoral rolls or polling stations.
• Monitor implementation of rules and regulations of the Election Commission.
• Prepare reports and keep election records.

• AECs can be promoted to superior grades (BS-18, BS-19, BS-20) like Deputy Election Commissioner, Regional Election Commissioner, or Provincial Election Commissioner on the basis of seniority and performance.

• They can be assigned anywhere in Pakistan and might have to travel quite a lot within their jurisdiction.
